What I'm Pursuing {& giving up} this Lenten Season
Monday, February 20, 2012
I'm chasing four feet this winter.
I'm mothering two boys with traveling shoes. One toddles away from me, brother, and camera flash. The other kicks a ball, jumps, and runs. Every new sunrise, I follow my boys' feet upstairs, downstairs, inside, outside, to forbidden corners and daily dwellings.
And sometimes in chasing little feet, my dream lags behind.
I'm rewriting my first novel at the same pace as the tortoise in the race against the hare. And even if the Hare wins, it's okay. I'm loving the process more than the prize, realizing the joy of discovery, the luxury of experimentation, the wisdom in waiting, and the truth of scripture:
"...Those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint." {Isaiah 40:31, NKJV}
For when I follow child steps, I learn to put just one.foot.in.front.of.the.other. Instead of skipping ahead of God's timing, I engage my senses in the here and now. I hear pure joy, taste true luxury, and drink from the fount of my mama's wisdom.
"Only stretch your feet as far as your blanket goes." Mama always said.
As I watch my boys explore, discover, play, and laugh, I understand why it's best to live within the beauty of my means. To fully live within each moment. Doesn't a writer find words in observing the world around her?
So as I chase socked feet and amble toward my dream, I realize a thousand summers could never replace this season, nor a thousand stories replace the one I'm living now.
###
- I'm taking time to pursue my Savior, family, and writing this Lenten season {begins February 23}, which means I need to give up my Monday posts. Monday Meditation will resume again in April.
- I'm giving up sugar for lent {I'm a little addicted--okay--I'm totally addicted to sugar}. I sensed the Lord asking me to let go of my emotional attachment to eating something sweet everyday. Who knows, maybe His word will become sweeter than brownies? Will you join me in this sugar detox challenge?
- Family Friday will continue as usual. We kick off March with a guest post by Anne Frank {a mom from my local moms' group & a mother of three boys}. She has a creative idea that your kids will love! My sisters have some great topics lined up in keeping with March's theme: Spring Cleaning Inside and Out. We hope you'll join the Friday conversations.

I love you and this blog, Melanie! Your posts are always so beautiful and full of life--you remind me of what's really important.
This year for Lent, I'm going to try to become more intentional about praying for others.
I'll miss your posts, but pray this Lenten season is especially meaningful for you and your family.
God bless, my sweet friend!
I am still listening to hear what is to be given and pursued this season of lent. It seems that what that is to be slowly forms in the days before lent begins and I just listen and trust that I will hear and choose to obey when Lent begins.
I will miss waking up on Monday morning to hear your words but may you be hear His voice through your pursuit and giving, in ways that you never imagined.
This http://kimscorner1.blogspot.com/ is my friend Kimberly's blog. She has such a way of seeing God in the simple, the painful, the beautiful, and the ugly.
Melanie, I'm grateful for the mention. You put me at such peace. Not many people can do that. I'm a go go go type of gal and you make me want to sit, listen, and absorb life!

Wow, Melanie. So beautifully put. I love this: "I'm loving the process more than the prize, realizing the joy of discovery, the luxury of experimentation, the wisdom in waiting, and the truth of scripture." I'm going to copy that in my journal! That is the same journey I have been on this last year. I called it "getting to the stride of God" (taken from Oswald Chambers). And I still have a long way to go. :-) Your boys are ADORABLE, by they way!
Thanks for publishing my blog, that was sweet of you. I look forward to coffee next week. Good luck with 'no sugar'. Maybe I should go for that too...but I would miss my baking!
Thank you for the kind mention!
I love that verse from Isaiah! Oh, so much truth...
Your boys are so beautiful and precious! I love the picture of them sharing the giggle together...so brotherly awesome!
Best wishes on the sugar thing...I'll say a prayer of strength for you :-D
Thank you, dear Melanie, for your kind mention and sweet stories about your life as a mama, wife, and writer.
You. will. not. regret. this. tortiose. pace.
Your boys will be men in a blink, then your house will breathe quiet, embracing you to write for many hours. As it sings and shouts now, enjoy and be thankful.
I always love your observations and you have such a lyrical voice.
No, I don't do lent. I try to keep my flesh under throughout the year. Sometimes I succeed!
Your two little men are adorable! You are blessed. :) Enjoyed hearing about your musings and journey. Thank you for all the links! Happy Monday!
Thanks so much for the mention, sweet friend. I'll miss seeing your words here, but I hope you enjoy your time away. I'm proud of you for slowing down and enjoying the journey. :)
What a wonderful post! And thank you for the link to my blog. :)
I always love your pictures and posts, Melanie. You have a great and settling way of putting so much into perspective. Thanks for mentioning my blog!
Hi Melanie -
Thanks for the link and your kind words.
Your little ones are so cute, and your words are filled with wisdom beyond your years.
Blessings,
Susan :)
I love that saying from your mama. Seriously, I'm going to write it in my journal -- it has so many implications.
I love how intentional you are. You are so good at letting yourself be hemmed in by God. You make me want to be a better person, friend.
For Lent, I'm thinking about really trying to implement my word for 2012 (cultivate) in tangible terms. I think I'm going to be giving up something like multi-tasking. Really living intentionally.
And I love Amy sullivan -- http://amylsullivan.blogspot.com
Ha! Just back up -- you already mentioned her. Isn't she popular!
Thanks for linking to my blog, Mel. I was thinking about Lent today, and don't know what I am going to do. Sugar is a big one...maybe that will be it? Love that you are enjoying the moments with your boys...they go by so fast!
Love,
Angie
Heidi, thanks so much for your kind words, friend! I love that you're taking time to intentionally pray. I wish we lived closer too! :)
Thanks, Marissa. I will check out your friend's blog. I trust the Lord will show you what He desires for you this season. I love your heart & faith, girl!
Wendy, I remember how you prayed for me at conference, and your prayer gave me so much peace. You have that effect on people as well. Thanks for your kind words.
Sara, I love that Oswald Chambers quote. I long to be in that stride. Thanks for visiting, friend!
Annabel, I'm looking forward to coffee too!
Loree, thanks for your prayers. I'm so grateful it's a gradual sugar detox. I'm not sure if I could do cold turkey.:) I need all the prayer I can get though. :)
Jeanette, thanks for always inspiring & encouraging me. I always learn so much from you.
Thanks for your encouraging words Sarah, Cindy, Susan, Julie & Karen. I appreciate you. :)
Jen, yes, I love Amy's blog! She's such a beautiful soul. And you seriously challenge me in my faith. I admire the way you take steps of obedience!
Angie, oh yes, sugar is the biggie. :) You should check out the sugar detox, girl. It would be fun to do it together!
I love your intentions spilled out in the most beautiful of words. All the best to you this season.
Thanks for the sweet mention about my blog. I really appreciate that. Thanks for making my day!
"So as I chase socked feet and amble toward my dream, I realize a thousand summers could never replace this season, nor a thousand stories replace the one I'm living now." These words are beautiful and I want to remind myself of them every day!
loved discovering your blog and then seeing a great list of other blogs. Blessings on your lenten journey too.
Melanie,
Thanks for mentioning my blog Wordsmith Woman! I find you blog so worth reading, girl!
Lent? It sounds unnatural, but each season, I love the Lenten journey. We have midweek services with a shepherd's supper before and join with other churches in town for this. Most of all, Lent shows God's outrageous love for me, for us.
This year, we're focusing on forgiveness and hence, reconciliation.
Jude Urbanski
Thank you for the mention of my blog! I always am encouraged by your posts. May God give you the desires of you heart to write =)!
